DUI charge filed against Connecticut man

On Behalf of | Jun 18, 2020 | Drunk Driving

A 53-year-old man is facing serious charges after an accident that may have permanently crippled another person. The accident occurred on Columbus Avenue in New Haven, Connecticut, around 3 p.m. on the afternoon of June 5th. The driver is facing a DUI charge with further charges pending against him. It is unclear whether he has retained defense counsel at this time.

According to the limited information available in the report, it appears the man was traveling on Columbus Avenue when he attempted to turn left. Another individual riding a moped was struck by his vehicle. The 69-year-old victim was taken to a local hospital with head trauma. Authorities say this individual could be permanently paralyzed as a result of the accident.

The driver remained on the scene. However, police say they conducted field sobriety tests, which he failed. He was arrested for DUI and was later released on a promise to appear. The court date was not made public by authorities.

A DUI charge is a serious offense in any situation, and even more so when a victim is injured or killed as a result. However, the burden of proof rests with the state of Connecticut, as prosecutors must prove beyond reasonable doubt that the man was indeed intoxicated behind the wheel at the time of the accident. His criminal defense attorney will carefully review the record of the accident and subsequent arrest to determine whether the man’s rights were upheld throughout the process. The attorney will use the facts of the case to build a compelling defense against the DUI and any other charges that might arise.
