Former Connecticut fire chief faces DUI charge

A man who used to run the firehouse in Cohanzie was arrested by police the night of June 12 under suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. Connecticut authorities apprehended the man, who recently resigned from his position after insensitive comments he posted on social media came to light. He now faces a DUI charge but has been released on $1,000 non-surety bond. No court date has been publicly announced.

According to the report, police received a call the morning of June 12 from witnesses who said they saw a driver strike a stop sign before continuing onward. Police pulled the man over shortly thereafter. It is unclear from the report how the officers on the scene came to the determination that the man was under the influence. No record of roadside sobriety testing was included in the report.

The man was arrested and charged with drunk driving, as well as carrying a loaded firearm while intoxicated and failure to drive in the correct lane. He was released in advance of a court date. There is no word as to whether he has retained criminal defense counsel at this time.

Connecticut state law affirms the man's right to an attorney when he faces his DUI charge. His criminal defense representation will work to build a compelling case in his defense, carefully reviewing the arrest record to ensure his rights were respected. The fact that the man recently lost his job may figure into the case, and his attorneys may consider plea bargains offered by the prosecution in this case to see his sentence reduced or eliminated altogether.
