What are ignition interlock devices?

According to the Department of Motor Vehicles, ignition interlock devices analyze the level of alcohol on an individual’s breath. Also known as ignition interlock systems, these devices prevent people from operating a vehicle if they are under the influence of alcohol. If you are charged with drunk driving in Stamford, or any other city across the state of Connecticut, you could be required to drive vehicles which have these devices installed.

If you find yourself facing allegations of driving under the influence, you could find yourself in an ignition interlock program, which limits your driving privileges. In fact, those who are required to participate in the program are not allowed to operate any motor vehicle that does not have an approved ignition interlock system installed in it.

Every 30 days, you will need to take your vehicle in to have the ignition interlock device calibrated and you will also have to pay for the cost of maintenance. It is against the law for another individual to use the device to start your car and you will need to retake breath tests periodically if your vehicle is left idling.

In addition to mandatory use of ignition interlock systems, drunk driving charges can lead to other serious consequences that may affect you as well. For example, you could find yourself out of work, behind bars or forced to pay steep fines, which highlights the importance of approaching DUI cases appropriately. You should not interpret any of this information as a substitute for legal counsel.
